VST Plug-ins do not always work alone. They are intended to complement a music software that is called a “VST host”, or a “DAW”. It is this DAW software that will allow plugins to be used and that will provide an environment to manage them. If you encounter some difficulties to install a VST plugin, read the guide! Compatible Platforms – Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Built by The Tracktion. Click the “Open in plugin interface” button below the dropdown to open the plugin so we can do a test. Now go back into your DAW software and open the LiveStream project that you already inserted the ReaStream Vst Plug-in for. Arrange your DAW window and OBS Studio window so they are side by side and you can see both. Any time you get a new plugin, it should be able to do something your DAW can’t. Or it should simplify your workflow. Both are good reasons to grab something new. The VSTs on this list are high quality and unique. Audio production can be expensive work, even if you go the virtual route with a digital audio workstation (DAW) and virtual instruments. Working with virtual studio technology (VST) plugins is tremendously convenient, but a lot of the best VST plugins out there are very expensive.
In this blog post I’ll take a look at plugins for the beginning music producer. It can be overwhelming for a beginner music producer. Because there are a lot of plugins (and types of plugins) out there. What do you need to know? What are the standards? Coming up. Plugins are software elements to extend the functionality of a program. In this case the software for music production: a DAW.
Types of plugins
There are different types of plugins:
instrument plugins - make sound. made a video about the basics
VST - Virtual Studio Technology: most famous. VST version 2 and version 3 windows + mac
AU - Audio Units: Mac only
AAX - for Pro Tools windows + mac
It depends on DAW wich plugins are supported. Pro tools only supports AAX plugins. Ableton and Studio One support only VST and AU Logic doesn’t support VST and AAX, only their own AU standard.
VST misconception
A lot of music producers are talking about VSTs. What they actually mean by VST is: plugins. A lot of music producers are not tech savvy and just blabbing around some terms they heard somewhere. VST is merely a standard. You are educated now :)
More plugins = better producer
A lot of beginner music producers think that buying new plugins will make them better producers. That is not the case. If your music doesn’t sound good. It’s because your skills are not good enough, you don’t need to buy a new plugin. Just make sure that your skills are top notch, then you can look for plugins. A good producer can make good music with mediocre plugins, a mediocre music producer makes mediocre music with the best plugins.
Stock plugins
A DAW nowadays come equipped with stock plugins. Those plugins will do just fine for the basic tasks. But you can purchase plugins to get different sounds for example.
Kinds of plugins
What plugins are there?
Instrument plugins: You can think of a Sampler, a Piano or a synthesizer.
EQ plugins: The equalizer shapes the sound by reducing or boosting frequencies. A particular sound too harsh? Lower the frequencies a 4000 hz a couple of Db and it sounds much better.
Analyser: analyses the loudness of all the frequencies. An Analyzer can be separate but are mostly build into a Equaliser
Limiter: reduces the volume of the sound when it exceeds a certain threshold.
Compressor: reduces the volume of the sound when it exceeds a certain threshold.
De-esser: specifically targets the S and T sounds that sound harsh.
gate: allow or disallows a sound to pass through when certain sound volume conditions are met
Saturation: distort the sound, so it sounds badass.
But there a lot more plugins out there. If you are serious about DJing and want to take it to the next level on the CDJ, you should check out my CDJ 2000 video course.

Today we’ll talk about vst plugins, DAWs and vst instruments. These are really critical to our productions and it’s the technology used by every famous producer of almost every genre out there.
DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation
It’s also known as Recording Program, Recording Software or Mixing Software. It is the program of your personal preference to record and mix music like Cubase, Pro Tools and Ableton to name a few.
Cubase is mostly used by European producers while Pro Tools is the No1 choice in the United States. Some other DAWs for you to consider are: Reaper, Logic Pro and FL Studio.
Reaper is a newer program in this field comparing to cubase and pro tools but it has frequent updates and promises a lot.
Many people switched to Reaper so I will create some videos for Reaper too.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology
DAWs work with VSTs. They are not standalone programs which means that they cannot be opened without using a DAW. In order to use VSTs you need a daw that supports them like Cubase.
VSTs are the necessary programs that help you mix. Programs like Equalizers, Compressors, Reverbs & Delays, Choruses and Limiters… every single processor and effect you are going to use is with one word… VST!
Pro Tools support RTAS instead of VST but it’s the exact same thing, except the name. Finally, the Pro Tools company offers a more expensive version of RTAS known as TDM which they claim to have a better sound resolution that RTAS.

While you can hear an insignificant difference between these 2, I mostly believe that this is just marketing, so that the company can earn more money.
I’ve mixed the exact same tracks using VST, RTAS and TDM and the difference was really hard to notice. There are more important things that you should take care of for a great sound, rather than worrying about VST or RTAS.

VST Instruments
VST instruments are similar to vst plugins with the difference that these are not processors or effects. The little i next to VST stands for the word instrument.
Kontakt libraries and instrument libraries from a huge range of companies run in the VSTi format, which uses the VST technology to create an instrument – pianos, drums, violins, anything you can think of – instead of a mixing processor like compressors and EQs.
I hope you now understand the differences between VST, VSTi and DAW. Expect more articles from me for this subject! Take care!
